One Fan’s View- The Case FOR Boise State

Garrett thinks Boise State should be in the discussion for the National Title.

I love the underdog.

Whether it be football, basketball, or chess, I almost always find myself rooting for the underdog. And maybe that’s why I like Boise State…(told you I could start a sentence with “and”, Mrs. Etgen).

I absolutely hate the argument that Boise State shouldn’t be in the running for the national championship, because “they don’t play anybody”.

The reason they don’t play anybody, is because “anybody” won’t play them. They are afraid of the fighting Petersen’s. They know he is fearless, they know he’ll do anything to win. As recent as last summer, Boise State was shopping around a 2 for 1, as in we’ll play 2 games at your place if you’ll come play us on the Smurf Turf.

Boise State is 80-2 at Bronco Stadium since 1999

Know how many calls they got? None. Maybe it’s because they are 80-2 there since 1999. Maybe it’s because the big boys would rather play 1-AA schools, I don’t know…but you can’t fault them for not playing anyone when no one will play them.

Now, after making this next argument, if you don’t agree with me, you never will, so you can probably stop reading.

If TODAY, you moved LSU or Alabama, and all their players, coaches, stadiums, fans, etc. to the Mountain West, would they deserve to be in the National Championship picture? They would play the exact same competition Boise State would be playing. They’d be playing “nobodies” week after week…some scouts say those 2 schools have as many as 17 NFL ready players, right now.

If your answer is no, you’re lying to yourself. LSU and Alabama are good because they have good players, and they supposedly play a good schedule. But in the same token, Boise State isn’t regarded as highly because they “don’t play anybody”…in my opinion, if you’ve got good enough players to compete, which the Broncos have shown they do, they should get their shot.

The problem is, if they ever do get their shot, they’d probably win a National Title.

This is one of the things that makes college football a joke. They say things like “It has the most important regular season of any sport”…when really, they mean “It has the most important regular season of any sport, if you’re in the SEC, Big 12, PAC-12, and Big 10″

They say you need to win all your games. Boise State does that. They say you need to play better competition, Boise State has tried, no one will accept.

Kellen Moore should be a Heisman Front Runner

Another thing that bugs me, is Kellen Moore couldn’t win the Heisman Trophy last year, because he played in the WAC.

“He’s putting up all his stats against WAC defenses”…guess what? He’s doing it with a WAC offensive line, WAC wide receivers, a WAC running back, a WAC coaching staff, and a WAC medical staff.

Let’s look at the stats from Kellen Moore up against those of “the best QB Prospect since Elway”, Andrew Luck.

Last year, Kellen Moore had a higher completion percentage.
He threw for 500 more yards than Luck, with the exact same amount of completions.
He threw for 5 more touchdowns than Luck. With 2 fewer interceptions, with fewer attempts.
Luck’s QB Efficiency Rating was 166.1, which is VERY good…Kellen Moore’s was 185.

Maybe it’s just my love for the Underdog…but I think Boise State not being near the top of the discussion for the National Title picture, is a travesty…but hey, that’s just One Fan’s View.

One Fan’s View- The Most Misunderstood Man In the Area

“He’s just doing it to inflate his son’s stats”
“They should be ashamed for running the score up”

All things you can read by sifting through some threads on a local website forum, frequented by anonymous people who would never have the guts to say half the things they write on there, to the people they are talking about.

Of course, I’m talking about Mike Mauk.

His story is legendary. 2 time State Championship coach, also a runner up to his credit. Players dotting the OHSAA record book on the offensive side of the ball left and right. Players garnering national recognition for their offensive stats…numerous division 1 athletes, in the Big 10, Big East, and ACC, (and if you believe the reports, the SEC).

And yet, all people unfamiliar with the man can do is bash him. He goes for 2 every time the score, the only reason they throw the ball every play is so his son’s look good. He runs the score up on people. He treats the chain gang poorly.

But personally, I think Mike Mauk is an absolute genius.

Just watch the highlights from last week’s game with Celina:

When Saturday rolls around for his opponent, he’s already in their head. When you start to watch film on Kenton, one of the first things you think about is how you’re going to keep up. You HAVE to go for 2 when you score, to keep up with them, otherwise for every TD you score, they’re one point ahead already…and you probably aren’t going to hold them to 1 touchdown.

Just think about it for a second…

Kenton scores 6 touchdowns…they make 4 two point conversions (and that’s giving the opposing D some benefit of the doubt)…that’s 44 points.
Defiance (who they play tonight), scores 6 touchdowns, and makes every single PAT (which is rare in high school), they’ve got 42…so you either have to go for 2 to keep up, or score 1 more touchdown than they did, which is a tall task.

Secondly, if you have the athletes, why NOT throw the ball every play? His offensive philosophy is, if I run 5 guys out on pass routes, chances are, one of them are going to beat your guys. And if you have a QB with the skill set that Maty has, why just have him turn around and heard the ball off?

The complete disregard for special teams angers some as well…they don’t kick it off deep, they don’t punt, they don’t kick extra points…but think about it…while the opposition is working on getting their punt coverage unit together, he’s working on his offense…while you’re trying to get the snaps down on an extra point, he’s game planning for your defense. An OBVIOUS advantage goes to his offense.

Does he sandbag a little while talking to the media? Certainly. At the start of the season, during the preview, he said the goals of the team were to win 5 games. I’m sure the goals were a tad bigger than that.

But what you might not see, is that the football players watch film and lift weights before school…not because he’s demanding, but because it keeps kids out of trouble. If you’ve gotta be at school at 6:30 am, you don’t exactly have time to be out the night before doing things you shouldn’t.

He’s also a big Christian. He and several of his players attend weekly FCA meetings. Andy did a story a few weeks ago, where you can see sophomore WR Matt Bahr talks about his faith.

Sure, Kenton has had their fair share of kids who have seen disciplinary problems, but Mike Mauk is a builder of young men, and I would bet almost any of his former players would tell you that.

He will do almost anything to send the spotlight off of his son, and onto the offensive lineman or receivers, but most assume his play calling revolves around his son…and I think that’s what bothers me the most about the general public’s perception of him. Maty is one of the best quarterbacks in the country, and people criticize the fact that Kenton uses him the way they do.

Some people think he’s heartless and jerk, but I think he’s an absolute genius who cares about the kids he’s coaching but hey, that’s just One Fan’s View.

One Fans View- I Hate to be “That Guy”

We had some really awesome TD Runs Friday night…

1 from McComb’s Jerry Brown here:

And another from Findlay’s Vance Settlemeier:

But…they shouldn’t have counted…hurdling is illegal in high school football. If a defender has 1 or 2 feet on the ground, you can not jump over him. It is rule 9-4-2D….don’t ask me why I know that.

I know it looks really cool, but they outlawed it because of things like this:

It’s just a dangerous thing, thankfully, nothing happened to Brown or Settlemeier…

I hate to be that guy, but hey, it’s just One Fan’s View.

One Fan’s View- If the Season Ended Today (Week 5)

Gonna try to update this every Friday with a “If the season ended today” type deal.

Obviously, this is just for fun.

In Division 2, Region 8:
Wapak would play AT Cincinnati Mt. Healthy (which would stink, cause chances are, I’d get the pleasure of driving there)

In Division 3 Region 10:
Elida would HOST Bishop Watterson, in a rematch of the Regional Semi’s of last year, when Reggie McAdams threw 5 INT’s…

St. Marys, Shawnee, Defiance, Ben Logan, and Napoleon are 15-20th in this region

Division 4, Region 14:
Kenton would host Huron in Week 11
O-G would play AT defending D4 Champ Bishop Hartley

Bath is 14th in Region 14

Division 5, Region 18:
Hopewell-Loudon would host Carey in Week 11…the Blue Devils beat down H-L last year, 68-14 in the regular season.

LCC would HOST Archbold…those 2 teams played in week 12 last year

And maybe the most interesting matchup we’ll find: Bluffton would host Liberty-Benton, in a game, if I had to guess, you would see on WOSN.

Columbus Grove is 11th, Spencerville is 13th
Patrick Henry, Tinora, and Delphos Jefferson are 17-19th

Division 5, Region 20:
Coldwater would finish 8th…and travel to Marion Pleasant…
Versailles would HOST Dayton Christian…

Anna is currently 18th

Division 6, Region 22:

Arcadia, who has been fantastic this year, would host Leipsic, again, a game you could probably see on WOSN
Crestview would host Edgerton

DSJ sits 10th, McComb and Arlington are 12th and 13th

Divison 6, Region 24:

DISREGARD EVERYTHING I POSTED ABOVE THIS

THHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE GAME:

If the season ended today,
Ada would host…Marion Local…now THAT is THE game you would see on WOSN

And Fort Loramie would play at Cincinnati Country Day.

So let’s recap.

Ada would play Marion Local…that would be a dandy.

Some people hate computer rankings, and even looking at them before week 8, but see, this was fun…but hey, that’s just One Fan’s View.

One Fan’s View- Falcons Name Starting QB

As we talked about yesterday during out taping of College Football Weekly with Todd Walker (shameless plug, airs at 6pm TONIGHT, on WOSN.), Matt Schilz was officially named the starter for Bowling Green’s week 1 game with Idaho, a week from tonight. Trent Hurley, a RS Fr, gave Schilz all he could handle in preseason camp.

I think this was the choice that most thought would be made all along. The experience Schilz brings to the table, in my opinion, trumps the athletic ability that Hurley has shown. I think Hurley will find his way onto the field, but if BG is going to be competitive in the MAC East, Schilz was the guy they needed to choose.

Couple of interesting things from Coach Dave Clawson’s weekly press conference:

1. He’s not using the Humanitarian Bowl from 2009 against Idaho as motivation.
Which I think is a good thing…there are only a handful of guys on the team that played in that game, so why use it as motivation…

2.) The Kibbie Dome is a “Campbell Soup can cut in half”

I'd call Dave Clawson's analogy spot on.

I would say that is a fair comparison. It’s quite the unique venue and is a challenge for anyone to play in.

3.) Inexperience.
You can tell right away Clawson knows they are inexperienced…they have 105 players…and 81 are freshman or sophomores. And 34 of them are on the 2-deep roster, which is a challenge now, but will be a big benefit for BG in 2 years or so…but hey, that’s just One Fan’s View.

One Fan’s View: Updated “Football Games That Don’t Happen, But Should”

Just poking around Bowling Green’s football website and stumbled upon this:

http://www.bgsufalcons.com/sports/2010/8/2/FB_0802100052.aspx?path=football

As you can see, in 2014, BG is scheduled to play at Western Kentucky.

So let’s remind ourselves of what the One Fan’s View Trophy would be from this titanic matchup.

The "One Fan's View Trophy" awarded to the winner of the BGSU-WKU football game

If you don’t love that trophy, there is something wrong with you, but hey, that’s just One Fan’s View.

One Fan’s View- Football Games That Don’t Happen, But Should

If I had it my way, fans at Bowling Green would see this guy every 2 years

Gearing up to go to some scrimmage football action here tonight (only 1 more week!!!!)…so it got me thinking what football game should happen but don’t…

1). Bowling Green vs Western Kentucky.

Western Kentucky just became a full time Division 1 member in football…and is ALSO located in Bowling Green…I think it would be awesome if these 2 schools played every year…it’s really not that far between the 2 schools (now that I look at it, google maps puts it at 6 hours…so longer than I thought) and their trophy looked something like this:

My choice for the BG-WKU Trophy

2.) Findlay vs Urbana.

I know these two schools played a couple of years ago, when Urbana made the jump up to Division 2…but they are two Division 2 schools in Ohio…Urbana ISN’T a member of the GLIAC…and maybe for my selfish reasons, Findlay could probably beat Urbana every year…

3.)Bluffton vs ONU

These 2 schools used to play, then it started to get out of hand, with games that were 29-0, and the last time they played (1997) 55-0…and the past few years, the Polar Bears could have named the score (and could have scored 100 if they really wanted too)…but with the Beavers headed in the right direction under Tyson Veidt (who I’m a big fan off…I really like all of our local college coaches), if the Beavers can get towards the top of the HCAC, I think it would be interesting to see these 2 schools match up…as opposed to ONU almost always looking for a non-conference game…(and we would probably broadcast it on WOSN, which again, for selfish reasons, makes me want this game to happen even more)

4.) Arlington vs Carey

Google Maps puts this one at a half hour between the 2 schools…but with the BVC only having 1 non conference game, this game will probably never happen (at least until Arcadia and Vanlue consolidate)…but it would be Red Devils vs Blue Devils…and who doesn’t think that would be cool…but hey, that’s just One Fan’s View.

One Fan’s View- Dysert Named Starter

Zac Dysert was named the starting QB for the RedHawks

Redshirt Junior QB Zac Dysert was named the starting QB for Miami (OH) this morning after a battle with true Sophomore Austin Boucher. Dysert, who missed the last 4 games of the season, including the MAC Championship game and the GoDaddy.com Bowl due to a lacerated spleen he suffered on TD run against Bowling Green.

Ironically, I aired a story last night about the position battle Dysert is in…you can take a peak at it on the video below.

New Miami Head Coach Don Treadwell, recruited Dysert when he was at Michigan State, and I think that familiarity really helped the Ada grad land the starting nod. Dysert, who was 4th in the MAC in passing a season ago, did have trouble with interceptions, with 12 INT’s…and after the way Boucher played in the 4 games he started, I would imagine Dysert will be on a short leash…and a tough start to the season at Minnesota and Missouri…after talking to Treadwell at MAC Media Day, I got the impression that he won’t be in a rush to make a rash decision or anything like that, so I would expect Dysert to at least get 4 or 5 games to show what he can do in Treadwell’s offense before he even thinks about a change…

I expect Dysert to excel, and be one of the top QB’s in the MAC, but hey, that’s just One Fan’s View.
